Depending upon the state you\u2019re located in, you may also be required to possess a USDOT number for intrastate commerce.<\/p><p>Granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a USDOT number is a unique identifier that\u2019s placed on your company vehicles. The number allows for the monitoring and collecting of information for compliance reviews, inspections, crash investigations, and more.<\/p><p>Do you need a USDOT number? And, if so, how do you install one on your company vehicle(s)? Read on for more information.<\/p>\n<\/div><h2 class=\"bde-heading-22895-102 bde-heading\">\nDo You Need a USDOT Number?\n<\/h2><div class=\"bde-rich-text-22895-103 bde-rich-text decoration-none breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>The easiest and most sure way to determine if you require a USDOT number is to take the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/registration\/do-i-need-usdot-number-1\">interactive quiz<\/a>\u00a0found on the FMCSA\u2019s website. In addition, some states require that your state abbreviation follows the USDOT number (check your state regulations).<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"bde-rich-text-22895-107 bde-rich-text decoration-none breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>You\u2019ll likely require a USDOT number if your company operates in interstate commerce and:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You have vehicles that haul more than 10,000 pounds of cargo;<\/li><li>You transport between nine and 15 passengers (including the driver) for compensation, whether direct or indirect;<\/li><li>You transport 16 or more passengers;<\/li><li>You haul hazardous materials.<\/li><\/ul><p>A USDOT number may also be required if you deliver within one state, but cross through another state during delivery; and if you ship between two destinations in the same state, but the products originate outside of the state.<\/p><p>Beyond federal regulations, most states require companies operating intrastate commercial motor vehicles to obtain a USDOT Number. Check with your state\u2019s intrastate commerce regulations for specific requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div><h2 class=\"bde-heading-22895-108 bde-heading\">\nSize, Color, Placement, More\n<\/h2><div class=\"bde-rich-text-22895-109 bde-rich-text decoration-none breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>So, you\u2019ve determined that you do indeed need a USDOT number, and you have now secured that number from the FMCSA.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"bde-div-22895-110 bde-div\">\n  \n  \n\t\n\n\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"bde-image2-22895-111 bde-image2\" src=\"https:\/\/signs-blog.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/USDOT-Numbers-1_560x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/signs-blog.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/USDOT-Numbers-1_560x350.jpg 560w, https:\/\/signs-blog.signs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/USDOT-Numbers-1_560x350-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\"><div class=\"bde-rich-text-22895-112 bde-rich-text decoration-none breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption><em>To ensure visibility, the USDOT number should be printed in colors that contrast with the background \u2013 black on white, white on black, light color on a dark background, dark color on a light background, etc.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"bde-rich-text-22895-113 bde-rich-text decoration-none breakdance-rich-text-styles\">\n<p>Here, then, is what you need to know regarding how that number must appear on your vehicle, and other specifics when it comes to installing a USDOT number:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Placement:<\/strong>\u00a0The USDOT number must be applied to the vehicle itself (not the trailer or some removable part of your vehicle), and it must be displayed on\u00a0<em>both<\/em>\u00a0sides of the coach or motor area (usually the driver\u2019s cab). Typically, the numbers are applied to the cab doors or adjacent to the doors.<\/li><li><strong>Permanency:<\/strong>\u00a0According to the FMCSA, the number must be\u00a0<em>permanently<\/em>\u00a0attached \u2013 that is, not taped or simply attached by magnets, etc.<\/li><li><strong>Size:<\/strong>\u00a0The only stipulation the FMCSA makes when it comes to size is that the number must be visible from 50 feet during daylight hours. The minimum height we would suggest is 2 inches. Also: Some individual states do indicate a specific number height of 3-4 inches (check with your state\u2019s guidelines for any restrictions).<\/li><li><strong>Color:<\/strong>\u00a0To ensure visibility, the USDOT number should be printed in colors that contrast with the background \u2013 black on white, white on black, light color on a dark background, dark color on a light background, etc.<\/li><li><strong>Font\/typeface<\/strong>: The FMCSA states that USDOT numbers should be printed with fonts that are easily read. Avoid ornate or other fancy fonts \u2013 clear and legible are what you need here.<\/li><li><strong>Other<\/strong>: Your USDOT number should include \u201cUSDOT\u201d prior to your assigned number.
